Little Simz at the 02 Islington - 16th February 2016
Little Simz is hot right now. On the back of her appearance in Forbes, she is on her first world tour, and is gaining fans left, right and centre. Her performance in London signals a return to her home turf, North London.
She certainly lived up to the hype surrounding her name. Her performance was professional and polished, and she brought passion and intensity to the stage. Her rendition of ‘Tainted’, one of her standout songs, was particularly good. Unfortunately for her, however, the crowd wasn’t engaged enough to return her energy. This brought down the atmosphere of the whole event, despite Little Simz’s valiant efforts. Supporting home grown talent is important, without doubt, and it was nice to see the venue absolutely packed, but it seems that Little Simz’s fame has meant that any hint of a dedicated core fan base has been lost. Let’s hope that this does not make her music suffer as a consequence.
There’s no doubt that Little Simz’s name is growing, not only nationally, but globally. This event only served to justify that fact. It will be exciting to see how far a British rapper, especially a female one, can rise in the tough, saturated global rap market in the future.
